Beautiful Kauai, Hawaii with kids

Instead of travelling to the mainland US, this year we decided to meet up with my husband's family in Hawaii. It's only 10 hours from Sydney, much cheaper flights, and a gorgeous place to holiday!

Two years ago we stayed in Maui, but this trip we decided on Kauai in the north-west of the islands. Lucky - Tropical Storm Flossie came through while we were there, but mostly dissipated by the time it reached the north-west. The weather was gorgeous and the intermittent cloud cover and showers didn't hamper our trip at all.

Here are some of my favourite photos (from my iPhone) and places from the trip that we visited with our 3 and almost-6-year-old girls. Click on the Read More link below to see more!

One of our first stops was Wailua Falls - gorgeous and our first sighting of Tropicbirds, with their pure white bodies and long feathery tails.

The next day we headed north to Kilauea to see the amazing birds in the wildlife refuge and the lighthouse. It was truly stunning and some ominous clouds that came through just added to the atmosphere. The cliff face opposite the lighthouse was completely covered in sea birds - it was pretty thrilling to see an albatross.

We had a lovely lunch at the Princeville Golf Course with views of the craggy volcanic mountains, beyond which they shot the film Jurassic Park. The Golf Course - like everywhere on Kauai - was dotted with wild chickens and roosters that were blown over the island during a Hurricane in the 80's and now rule the roost.

The next day we took the kids to a quiet rock pool at Lyndgate Park to get them used to snorkelling.

We didn't quite have the energy to tackle the rugged and remote Napali Coastline (next time!), but we did manage to drive up to Waimea Canyon where the girls were fascinated with the volcanic rock.

On the way home we stopped at the Kauai Coffee Company, and then found a great fruit stand near Po'ipu with a lady who was an expert with the machete, cutting up our coconut for us. I think this was the highlight of the trip for the girls! The fresh mangoes, pineapples and lychees were worth stopping for too.

Po'ipu is a gorgeous area in the south where we found the Spouting Horn blowhole and did a spot of snorkelling off the beach.

Harris and I returned the next night to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary at the gorgeous Beachhouse Restaurant. Yay us! They take their fish seriously - the menu includes the names of the fisherman and their villages!

We stayed just a shuttle bus ride away from the gorgeous Kalapaki Beach and our favourite drinking hole - Duke's Kauai where the cocktails come with this view.

Look at how gorgeous the view is from the amazing place that we stayed at in Lihue!

It was truly a fabulous week and we can't wait to head back to Hawaii again in a few years - the perfect half-way point for our US family.
