Brown Owls Crochet Granny Squares

I was never a Girl Guide or a Brownie, but I was in Girls Brigade. And although we had a great time, I have always wondered what it would be like to wear that mushroom brown uniform and bake cookies and do all the things that Brownies do. So I did the next best thing, and joined the Brown Owls group in Brisbane.

This group is decidedly for big kids and we like to get together once a month to have some morning tea and work on a craft project. This weekend we worked on crocheting granny squares. I had crocheted with my Mum when I was young, and it's amazing how it all came flooding back. It was lovely to craft and chat. Next step - doilies. I'd love to make some sweet patches to sew onto Sophie's jeans.

For more photos and previous meetings, check out the posts on the About Me page.

Brown Owls was conceived by Pip from Meet Me At Mike's. For more information on Brown Owls and a chapter near you, check out the blog.

This sounds so fun! I need to find a group like this so that I may learn how to knit and crochet. I was a Brownie when I was 6, but was bored to tears by the dorky songs and depressed by the setting of the dark metal portable building where we met behind the elementary school. We never made fun crafts, so I usually ditched and headed for the playground.

My Mum was a yoga teacher, as well! Isn't that strange. (or possibly not).
I shouldn't be reading blogs, as Craft Show opens tomorrow, and I still have a lot of work to do. But I need my daily fix.
I'd love to come along to Brown Owls, too, and be reminded how to crochet - which I used to do with my mum.

Thanks Em! No, I am so slack.

Hi Ellie - maybe not so strange; we have heaps in common! Definitely send your name in for the Brown Owls waiting list; would love to have you join us x

Your square turned out just lovely! I was never a Brownie either, but was a "Sunbeam" instead.

I knew how to crochet as a kid too, taught by a babysitter actually. I learned to do basic knitting a couple of years ago but really I am more drawn to crochet work as I run across posts like this. It's encouraging to hear it came back to you quickly, maybe i'll give it a try too!

Hello Jess! I highly recommend giving it another whirl. It's super therapeutic. Let me know if you do...

Steph, I googled granny squares to try and find some inspiration of what I could make with my squares, and this post was the fifth result!

Now that's what I like to hear Lis! Looking forward to see what you make you with your squares. Mine is just going to be one big one I think because I can't remember how to start a new one.

Just written a blog about my fabulous high teas with my nana and was thinking of mentioning the crochet lessons she would give as we sat and drank our tea. Those little crochet squares i struggled with and how proud I would be when I took one home to show my mum. Thanks mum for not mentioning how grubby they were from my sweaty little hands.
